Memorial trees

Many years ago when recording war memorials in Sheffield I visited Meersbrook school on Meersbrook Road.

The headmaster told me the trees in the playground were a memorial to the pupils killed in the First World War.

Some were planted on Binfield Road at the side of the school and others on Meersbrook Road.

Those on Meersbrook Road were later chopped down to make it easier for the buses .

The headmistress of the time, a Miss Pilly, executed the illuminated address on the war memorial for St Vincent’s in Solly Street.
