Meeting date set to sign devolution deal
Sheffield Council will hold a meeting this week to make a decision on the Sheffield City Region devolution deal, now that changes the authority asked for have been secured.
It has been agreed that an elected mayor will not have an overall power of veto - while the council also said they did not want to support a South Yorkshire-only model, where residents in the county would have a mayor but other parts of the region wouldn’t.
This has now been resolved, with Chesterfield and Bassetlaw proposing to become full members of Sheffield City Region, while Bolsover, North East Derbyshire and Derbyshire Dales will fall outside areas of policy the mayor has responsibility for.
Sheffield Council leader Julie Dore said: “We made it clear that we would not sign Sheffield up to a model of devolution that we did not think was in the interest of our city. We have stood up for Sheffield to get these results.”
The council meeting will be held on Friday, March 18. The devolution deal will then be discussed and signed.
