Medal of achievement for Sheffield hospitals' professor

Eugene McCloskey, Professor of Adult Bone Diseases at the Trust’s Metabolic Bone Centre was awarded the accolade by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) at the World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases.

The Medal of Achievement is presented annually by IOF to honour an individual researcher who has significantly advanced the field of osteoporosis through his original and outstanding scientific contributions.

Professor McCloskey said: ““I am deeply honoured and proud to have received this award from the International Osteoporosis Foundation. We live and work in a highly collaborative world of research, and this award also reflects on the contributions from many excellent friends and colleagues that I have worked with in Sheffield and beyond.”

Osteoporosis affects around three million people in the UK and is a condition that weakens bones, making them more likely to break.

The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) is a global alliance of patient societies, research organizations, healthcare professionals and international companies working to promote bone, muscle and joint health.

Professor McCloskey is based at the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Metabolic Bone Centre, located at the Northern General Hospital and is the largest of its kind in the UK and provides care to patients across South Yorkshire and beyond.

The World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis & Musculoskeletal Diseases is the world’s largest annual forum for the presentation of clinical research and new advances in the prevention and management of bone, muscle and joint disorders.
