McDonald's cleans up area voted Sheffield's worst grot spot

The fast food giant teamed up with the paper to ask readers to choose the area most in need of a clean-up.

More than 750 people voted online, with Castlegate in the city centre proving the overwhelming favourite.

More than 20 volunteers from McDonald's headed there on Saturday, March 4, armed with litter grabbers in support of the Great British Spring Clean campaign.

They began collecting rubbish around Castlegate before spreading out to other parts of the city centre.

McDonald’s area manager Jill Hulett, who oversees six restaurants across Sheffield, said: "We were delighted to participate alongside so many willing volunteers who all played their bit in helping make Sheffield a cleaner place to live.

"Thankfully we were very lucky with the weather and it was very rewarding to receive such positive comments from local passers-by as we cleared 20 bags of litter from the centre of Sheffield.

"The team worked really hard and we are all really proud to have helped the local community as Castlegate and the town centre now looks much cleaner."

The McDonald's volunteers were among some half a million people rolling up their sleeves as part of the national campaign to tidy up our streets.

The fast food chain says its staff carry out daily litter patrols around its stores across the country, clocking up 150,000 miles a year.
