The new Skills Village will provide people with the opportunity to develop their construction skills and knowledge in order to address the skills shortage and close the gap between education and the industry.

The village, which is a collaboration between Willmott Dixon Construction, Northern Regeneration and Barnsley College, is based next to the National College for High Speed Rail site.

Students will work on a ‘live’ construction site and gain first-hand experience of working on a construction build from design to finish, whilst developing their skills in painting and decorating, plastering, bricklaying, plumbing, carpentry and joinery.

Mayor Ros Jones will officially open the Skills Village on March 23 and will then take a tour of the site to see students working in training areas on a number of construction activities.

Anthony Dillon, Managing Director of Willmott Dixon Construction in the Northern Region, said: “We are delighted to be working with partners who share our enthusiasm to encourage people into an industry that has such a positive impact on people’s lives.”

Graham Ratcliffe, Managing Director at Northern Regeneration, said: “The Skills Village is a fantastic opportunity to recruit new talent. Students will gain ‘real life’ training and employment opportunities.”
