FIRE chiefs have signed up to a new on-line mapping service which plots the locations of blazes dealt with by crews so community safety work can be targeted at areas in need.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue is the first in the country to use the Ordnance Survey’s ‘OnDemand Web Map Tile Service’ – a new online service which links up-to-date maps with the fire service’s existing data.

It is hoped the new mapping software will help identify hotspots for certain types of incidents and to highlight where extra fire prevention and road safety work is needed.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Neil Hessell said: “Advanced mapping techniques are an important way for us to plan how we deliver our services and to analyse and report on our work.

“This new mapping service will allow us to do that even more accurately and more efficiently.”
