Detectives also want to speak to him about a burglary at a nearby property that same night.

Detective Sergeant Michelle Freedman, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “I must stress that this investigation has continued over the last 12 years and we are issuing this appeal now because we have exhausted every other opportunity to locate Ali.

“Our enquiries have included regular checks with a wide range of agencies including UK Border Agency, Department for Work and Pensions, Her Majesty Revenue and Customs, various housing agencies and banks.

“Ali is originally from Iraq and we understand he is due for deportation back to Iraq, so there have been concerted efforts to find him over the last 12 years.

“We believe that he may be using an alternative name and is actively evading arrest.

"We have worked with police forces across the country to act on any new lines of enquiry, including executing warrants in Doncaster and in the West Midlands area to no avail.

“The photographs we have of Ali are not recent, so his appearance may be different to what is pictured, but I’d urge anyone with information about this man to get in touch with police.

“He is wanted in connection with a serious sexual crime and it is important we locate him.”
