Ahead at the interval through Emma Johnson’s goal in the first 10 minutes, Sheffield went on to match the highest score in WSL 2 this season with Chelsea Flanagan 2, Jodie Michalska and Ellie Gilliatt on target in the second half.

Sheffield had not scored in their three away games previously, all before the mid-season break when they were acclimatising to life at a higher sphere.

Now manager Zoe Johnson believes her side are sending out a message to the rest of the division.

After their slow start, Club have found their feet, reaching the quarter-finals of the FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup while also recording three league wins to move up to seventh.

“It will do the girls’ confidence the world of good to see that we can score goals. We were more clinical,” said Johnson.

“It’s massively important to put a bit of a run together. I think we were unlucky in some of the earlier games this season – but we certainly won’t get carried away.

“Teams will be taking us seriously. We will always be the underdogs. But we’ve got a good side and it was always going to take us time to click.

“This season is a learning curve and hopefully next season we’ll be even stronger.”

Sheffield host Bees in the Continental Tyres Cup quarter-finals in a fortnight, but before then there are two important League matches, at home to Millwall Lionesses on Sunday (2pm) and then away to Everton a week tomorrow.

Any reward from their visit to Chelsea on Sunday will be considered a bonus for Doncaster Rovers Belles. Chelsea are the WSL 1 champions, but have stuttered in recent weeks though they are still second in the table, while Belles are bottom without a point from five games.

There was welcome news for Belles last Sunday when Birmingham beat Sunderland 1-0 to leave Sunderland six points ahead of Belles, but from five games more.

Sunday’s pre-season friendlie include Dronfield Town v Steel City Wanderers (noon) and Sheffield Development v Leeds Utd (11.30am at Hillsborough College).
