On other occasions, waste material was removed from Morris’ van, which advertised a removal service, and was fly tipped onto the council-owned land.

Further investigations revealed that Morris had been collecting both waste and scrap metal without the appropriate licences.

Morris was given a 26-week prison sentence, suspended for 18 months on the condition that he carries out 100 hours of unpaid work and a 20 day rehabilitation activity.

He was ordered to pay council costs of £600 and compensation of £2,490.00.

The court also granted a forfeiture order for a van, pick-up truck and horse box seized as part of the investigation.

Tom Smith, Rotherham Council’s Assistant Director for Community Safety and Street Scene, said: "We strongly advise members of the public to be very cautious when choosing a contractor to remove waste.

"You should always make sure that anyone you ask to help remove rubbish from your property can do so legally and has a valid waste carrier’s licence. We recommend that residents insist on seeing the company’s licence number."
