Serwan Mohammed said he was scared in case the gunman was still around as he helped the injured man, who had implored him for help after being shot in the foot.

The victim had rushed into a shop on Abbeydale Road on the afternoon of Saturday, August 29, when he saw Mr Mohammed and said: “Someone’s shot me.”

Mr Mohammed said: “I didn’t believe him at first – he didn’t look injured, he looked OK.

"Then I looked down and saw the blood coming from his leg. We found a chair for him and he sat down until help arrived for him, about five minutes later.”

The police were the first of the emergency services to arrive, and started giving the man first aid on the pavement, until paramedics arrived in an ambulance after another few minutes.

Officers closed a number of shops in the area and cordoned off Abbeydale Road and some of its side streets.

"It happened about mid afternoon, but until then it had just been a normal rainy day,” added Mr Mohammed.

"I was worried for everyone’s safety. When someone says they’ve been shot, you fear that there’s someone behind them. Other people came to see what was happening and I said ‘there’s been a shooting’.

"One of the people who were there came and said they’d heard three of four shots.”

He said the wounded man was aged in his late teens or early 20s, and was swearing with pain.

One resident said there had been a number of shootings in the area recently, saying they were ‘quite worried’.

On Sunday, Abbeydale Road and its nearby streets looked back to normal, but a blood stain remained on the surface of the pavement where emergency services had carried out first aid in the minutes following the shooting which happened in Harwell Road, Nether Edge.

Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information should call 101, quoting incident number 528, or Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.
