The victim, a 23-year-old man, was walking along Bridge Street, near to the Co-op, at around 7.30pm on Wednesday, January 13 when he passed a group of four or five young men.

He continued to walk up a pathway which runs between Bridge Street, opposite the war memorial on the corner of Kircroft Lane, and Sheepcote Road.

It is thought one of these men followed the victim along the pathway, shouted abuse at the victim and punched him.

The men in the group are described as being aged in their late teens or early 20s, and one of the men was on a black moped.

Inspector Paul Corton, who is in charge of policing in North East Derbyshire, said: “This was a cowardly and unprovoked assault on a young man in the middle of Killamarsh and officers are working hard to identify who is responsible.

“We are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed this incident, or anyone with any information about the attack, and would particularly like to trace the man on the black moped who was seen outside the Co-op store in Killamarsh shortly before the incident.”

Anyone with information should contact Derbyshire police on 101, quoting crime number 2052/16, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
