A man is on hospital in a serious condition after being shot in his face in a Sheffield park.

The 22-year-old was shot in Meersbrook Park, Meersbrook, at 6.25pm yesterday, South Yorkshire Police revealed this morning.

WANTED: Police seeking man over armed robberyA South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "An investigation has been launched after a firearm was discharged in Meersbrook Park last night, resulting in a man suffering facial injuries.

"At around 6.25pm, it is reported that a 22-year-old man in the park had suffered injuries to his cheek, consistent with a gunshot wound.

"He was taken to hospital where he currently remains in a serious but stable condition.

"At this time, no arrests have been made in connection to the incident.

"Detectives are continuing to carry out enquiries today to identify the offender and would like to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in and around Meersbrook Park last night."

A woman posting on Facebook last night, said it was her son who was attacked and that he was shot in his neck.

She said he was walking towards the Cross Scythes pub when he was shot by a man who asked him for cash and cigarettes.

She said it was an 'unprovoked attack'.

She wrote: "We had just picked our son up from work, he was on the phone talking to a friend walking to the Cross Scythes, he was shot through the neck in an unprovoked attack from a stranger asking for money and fags."

She said the gunman was wearing an 'army jacket' at the time of the attack.
