A man had to be led to safety through his smoke-filled house after a fire which is thought to have been started deliberately.

The man aged in his 30s was helped out of his terraced home, on Brinsworth Road in Catcliffe, Rotherham, by fire crews at 8.45pm on Tuesday.

A fire service spokeswoman said the blaze was thought to have been started deliberately and investigations were continuing.

The police have been informed.

She added: “The man was still upstairs in the house when we attended and one of our firefighters went in wearing breathing apparatus to lead the man downstairs through the smoke.

“The fire has gone down as a deliberate one.

“Fans were also used by firefighters to clear smoke out of the property.”
