"As a result of good fortune and the preventative actions of the officers their injuries were not as serious as first thought but both officers are not on duty today as a result of this incident."
He added: "Assaults on police officers are something that should not be happening. Police officers like anyone else go to work not expecting to be assaulted - it is not acceptable.
"These people are our protectors and subjecting them to assaults is not something that is acceptable in any way, shape or form.
