A man was punched to the ground and kicked by a gang in what police say was an unprovoked assault in Barnsley.

The 28-year-old was leaving a bar on Peel Street in the town centre with his fiancée on Saturday, at about 2.30am, when the group of four men launched their attack.

After being punched to the ground outside the town Jobcentre, the victim was repeatedly kicked.

The attackers are described as being of Eastern European or Asian origin.

One wore a white top and another, who had a black bob-style haircut, was wearing a black jacket.

The group then made off on foot up Fenton Street, along Peel Parade and to Summer Lane.

PC Madalaine Thomas, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “This was a nasty, unprovoked assault on a man who had been enjoying a night out with his fiancée.”

Anyone with information is asked to call South Yorkshire Police on 101.
