A man has been jailed for stealing a bag from a Rotherham pensioner at her husband's grave.

Wayne Robert Hucknall, aged 33, of no fixed abode, targeted his 80-year-old victim as she tended her husband's grave at St Mary's Church, Catcliffe.

He pleaded guilty to theft during a hearing at Rotherham Magistrates' Court, where he received a 18-week prison sentence.

Hucknall was arrested after his mother contacted South Yorkshire Police with suspicions that he may have been responsible for the offence.

PC Garry Pratt said: “This incident shocked the local community and I want to thank the public for the positive response we had to our appeals for information and witnesses.

“Both the victim and myself would like to offer our thanks to Hucknall’s mother, who came forward following our appeal as she suspected her son of being involved in this matter.

“I am pleased we have been able to secure a custodial sentence for this matter and I hope the local community are reassured by the positive action taken by police.”

Hucknall committed the offence at around 2.35pm on Tuesday, March 8.

He received an eight-week jail term for a separate offence of theft.
