Man jailed after bottle attack on Sheffield bar doorman

Shadrack Ferguson, aged 30, of Long Henry Row, Park Hill, was on a night out in the early hours of May 31, Sheffield Crown Court heard.

The court was told Ferguson tried to gain entry to the Melt Bar on West Street but was turned away because he had trainers on.

Ian West, prosecuting, said: “Ferguson went home to change his footwear but when he returned the doorman didn’t let him in saying he ‘didn’t like his attitude’.

“Ferguson then picked up a wine bottle and threw it at the direction of the doorman which caused a cut above the eye.”

Mr West added that Ferguson ran off and hid behind a takeaway counter before being arrested.

Andrew Swaby, defending, said: “This was an isolated incident and he is extremely remorseful for what he has done.

“This is a man with anger management problems and is willing to accept help available to him.”

Ferguson pleaded guilty to actual bodily harm.

The doorman in his victim impact statement said: “I had no idea what he pulled on me, it could’ve been anything. The incident has affected me, I’m scared to do my job.”

Judge Peter Kelson QC told Ferguson said: “You’re lucky this was just a cut above the eye. It could’ve been much worse.

“You have a poor criminal history which includes an assault on a police officer in 2013. A custodial sentence has to be imposed.”
