Man injured in Sheffield flat fire in 'critical condition' and fighting for life

A man injured in a fire in Sheffield is in a critical condition in hospital today.

He was brought out of a burning building on Chesterfield Road, Heeley, yesterday morning and taken to hospital, where he remains today.

The fire started in a ground floor window shop and spread to flats and the roof space above.

An investigation has been launched to establish the cause, with the scene of the fire still cordoned off today.

South Yorkshire Police said: “A cordon remains in place at the scene whilst officers conduct their enquiries.

“The man injured remains in a critical condition in hospital.”

At the height of the blaze there were around 40 firefighters involved in the firefighting operation and searching the burning building for casualties.

Police and paramedics were deployed and an air ambulance was scrambled.

It was initially thought that the blaze started in Milan’s pizza shop but was later established that it started next door.
