Man hunted by police for frightening woman in Rotherham garage

Detectives are searching for a man who tried to ignite a lighter in a Rotherham garage while a woman next to him was holding a canister of petrol.

The incident at the Jet garage in Barnsley Road, Wath, was reported to South Yorkshire Police on Thursday, November 12.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “The man is alleged to have taken a cigarette lighter out of his pocket, trying to ignite the lighter a number of times, before leaving the garage in a grey Transit van.”

Police Constable Emma Lowe investigating said: “This individual caused a significant amount of fear and distress for the woman involved in this incident.

“Despite trying to trace the van, reviewing CCTV footage and an appeal using our Caught on Camera pages, we have not identified the person responsible.

“We believe the man pictured holds important information about this investigation and if you recognise him, or this image is you, we’d like you to get in touch.”
