Five fire engines and a turntable ladder attended the incident on Martin Street , Upperthorpe, at about 6.30pm yesterday after neighbours raised the alarm.
Several teams of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the block flats, with the fire confined to one flat on the fifth floor.
The occupant, a man in his 70s, was found to have died.
No one else is thought to have lived at the property.
