Man dies after ‘tragic’ incident at Chesterfield Special Cylinders in Sheffield

A worker has died after an incident at a Sheffield factory.

The man – named as 64-year-old John Townsend – suffered fatal injuries in the incident at Chesterfield Special Cylinders, Meadowhall Road, Meadowhall.

A spokesman for the firm, ‘a world-leading provider of bespoke, high-pressure gas containment solutions’, said: “On Wednesday, there was an incident during a leak test procedure, which resulted in the tragic death of one of our employees.

“The family has been informed.

“We are shocked and saddened by this incident.

“We have reported the situation to the Health and Safety Executive and will be working closely with them in order to establish precisely what happened.

“ Our thoughts, and those of all of his colleagues at CSC, are with the family at this time.”

Police and the HSE are now investigating the incident.

An HSE spokeswoman said: “I can confirm that HSE has been informed of this fatality and is liaising with the police and investigating.”

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police said: “On Wednesday, a 64-year-old man was fatally injured at Chesterfield Special Cylinders, Meadowhall Road, Sheffield.

“Police and the Health and Safety Executive are currently undertaking a joint investigation to establish the cause of this tragic incident.

“A post mortem examination has been carried out with further enquiries ongoing.”
