Man collapses outside Sheffield Cathedral after taking legal high Spice

A man high on the legal drug was seen collapsing outside Sheffield Cathedral by staff at around 5pm before he began to suffer seizures.

The man was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital.

A member of staff at the Cathedral said he was the second person that day requiring an ambulance after collapsing from the legal high.

The worker who did not want to be named, said it was lucky staff noticed the man collapse as he was hidden in between two cars.

The staff member said: “The problem is they could be anywhere in the city, he was just walking through when he fell and started having seizures.

“But he’s lucky that he’s here and he’s by the Cathedral and it’s the staff that have noticed. I don’t dare to think what would have happened if we had not seen him.”

Earlier this month, three of the Sheffield Archer Project’s clients were admitted to hospital after collapsing from Spice.

The project, which operates out of Sheffield Cathedral and cares for the city’s homeless people, first warned of the “particularly dangerous strain” being sold on the streets.

A member of the Cathedral’s staff said: “We are probably more aware than the general public of the effects of spice because we work so close to the Archer Project. It’s very scary seeing the effects first hand.”
