A man has been charged with murdering a woman in a 'prolonged attack' in Barnsley.

Liam Fletcher, aged 29, of Elizabeth Street, Goldthorpe, is accused of killing a 35-year-old woman, whose body was found in a house in West Street, Goldthorpe, on Saturday morning.

A post mortem examination revealed the woman, who has not been named by police, suffered multiple injuries in the attack.

Her family has been informed of the death and relatives have been offered specialist support to help them come to terms with their loss.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "Detectives have charged a 29-year-old man with murder following the discovery of a woman's body at a property in Goldthorpe, Barnsley.

"Liam Fletcher, of Elizabeth Street, Goldthorpe, was charged this morning and will appear at Barnsley Magistrates' Court today.

"Police were called to an address on West Street following a report received of concern for a woman on Saturday, October 8 at around 10.20am.

"On arrival, the body of a 35-year-old woman was found. While official, formal identification has not yet taken place, officers are confident of the woman's identity and her family have been informed and are receiving support from specially trained officers.

"A post-mortem examination revealed the cause of death was a result of multiple injuries from a prolonged attack."
