Man charged with death by dangerous driving after OAP dies in three-car smash

A man from Doncaster has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving following a fatal collision in Mexborough on Sunday morning (February 21).

The victim, John Thompson, aged 72, from Conisbrough, died as a result of the injuries he sustained in the collision, which occurred at around 10.20am on Doncaster Road.

Three cars were involved in the crash; a black Audi A4, which was travelling towards Mexborough from Denaby Main, and a white Vauxhall Corsa and a green Toyota Corolla, both travelling in the opposite direction.

Mr Thompson, the driver of the Toyota, was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary but was pronounced dead a short time after arrival.

The driver of the Audi, Aleksandrs Ivanovs, 31, of Manvers Road, Mexborough, appeared at Doncaster Magistrates’ Court on February 23 charged with causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He was remanded into custody to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday, March 22.

A passenger in the Audi, a 34-year-old man, was taken to hospital with serious injuries but has since been discharged.

A second passenger in the Audi, an 18-year-old man, and the driver of the Corsa, a 41-year-old man, suffered slight injuries.
