A man has been arrested over a hit-and-run in Sheffield in which a man was left for dead.

Roland Beckett, aged 73, from Stannington, was hit by a car which failed to stop in Dykes Hall Road, Hillsborough, on Tuesday, April 4.

He suffered a shattered ankle and two fractured kneecaps in the crash outside Tesco, which was witnessed by his daughter and three grandchildren, aged nine, five and three.

The dad-of-three was hit by a yellow and black Audi A3 which reversed out of a queue of traffic to perform a U-turn at a set of lights.

He has been released from hospital but needs 24-hour care at home.

South Yorkshire Police said a man was arrested over the collision before being released under investigation while enquiries continue.
