A MAN has been arrested by police investigating a sex attack on a woman in a Doncaster subway.

Officers were called out early on Saturday morning after the incident had been reported.

The area around the subway in Sprotbrough was sealed off as teams of scenes of crime officers carried out investigations into the allegations.

Police tape kept the public away from the area where the officers were working.

Officers were described by people living nearby as searching bushes in the area which had been cordoned, near the KFC restaurant and drive-through, close to the point where Sprotbrough Road joins York Road.

Motorists in the area reported traffic jams and some believed they may have been connected to the inquiries.

A police spokesman said: “Officers in Doncaster are investigating an allegation of a serious sexual assault that happened in the Sprotbrough area of Doncaster.

“The alleged incident happened around 5.30am on Saturday, October 1, on waste land off of Sprotbrough Road.

“A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and officers are continuing with enquiries.”

One resident said there had been speculation among locals about what had happened - with some suggesting at one stage that someone may have been murdered.

Another resident said: “The incident will be of concern to all Sprotbrough residents as we regard it as one of the safest parts of the borough.

“I think there will be a lot of women of all ages concerned to hear about this.”

Detectives have now put out an appeal for information on the incident.
