South Yorkshire Police said the driver continued driving ' at speed' along Mansfield Road, towards Wales Bar, where he rammed a police vehicle in a bid to escape.

When he tried to ram a second police car he was eventually brought to a halt and was arrested for dangerous driving, driving without insurance or a licence, two robberies and two attempted robberies.

The police chase was mounted at 3.05am yesterday.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Officers from Joint Specialist Operation took over the pursuit of a Renault Laguna, which had failed to stop for our Sheffield colleagues in the Prince of Wales Road area of Sheffield.

"Our officers followed the vehicle through Handsworth at speed into Swallownest via Woodhouse Mill, where the vehicle lost its front nearside tyre.

"The vehicle continued on three wheels at speed before entering Mansfield Road towards Wales Bar, deliberately ramming a police vehicle in an attempt to get away.

"Joint Specialist Operation Unit officers are highly trained pursuit drivers, authorised in tactical pursuit and containment.

"As the vehicle attempted to ram a second police vehicle, tactical contact was made with the Laguna, bringing the pursuit to a safe conclusion."
