A MAN climbed out of a window and onto his roof to escape flames after his flat in Sheffield caught fire.

The man, in his 20s, was rescued by firefighters who put a ladder up to the roof of his flat, above The Caspian restaurant on Abbeydale Road.

A TV or DVD player had developed an electrical fault, causing the living room to go up in flames. The rest of the flat was smoke-logged in the blaze at 12.15am yesterday.

Two women were taken to hospital after fire broke out on the ground floor of a terraced house in Sheffield.

Firefighters rescued an elderly woman from the front room, and a second woman in the property on Neville Close, Pitsmoor, was taken to hospital suffering breathing difficulties.

An investigation is underway into the cause of the fire at 1.10pm on Monday.
