A DRIVER aged 60 was killed and his passenger suffered serious injuries when his 4x4 overturned on the M1 near Sheffield.
The crash happened on the southbound carriageway of the motorway, at junction 33 at Catcliffe, just before 5.45pm.
The man was travelling in a Mitsubishi Pajero 4x4 which was hit by a blue Fiat Stilo driven by a 24-year-old woman.
Her car lost control and veered out of the third lane into the path of the Mitsubishi, before crossing over the grass verge of the exit slip road and colliding with a post.
The 4x4 then smashed into the back of a black Volkswagen Golf in the offside lane of the slip road, coming to rest upside down.
The drivers of both the Mitsubishi and the Golf were trapped in their cars, with the 60-year-old, from Nottingham, sustaining fatal injuries.
His passenger - a 31-year-old man, also from Nottingham - was taken to Rotherham Hospital to be treated for serious injuries to his hands.
The Golf’s driver - a 22-year-old woman from Sheffield - and the driver of the Fiat, from Derby, were not seriously injured.
The motorway was closed between junctions 33 and 34, at Meadowhall, for several hours following the collision, while the vehicles were cleared and crash investigators worked at the scene.
The road, already busy with thousands of motorists heading to Meadowhall for late-night Christmas shopping, was reopened at 10.30pm.
Police are appealing for information about the crash on Tuesday, as well as witnesses who saw the how the vehicles were being driven beforehand.
