Making your vote count

COUNCIL officers in Barnsley hope to mark the 90th anniversary of women winning the right to vote by getting the best ever response to electoral registration.

They will produce the electoral register – a list of voters for the 2008 local elections.

Andrew Frosdick, Barnsley Council’s borough secretary and electoral registration officer, said: “As the suffragettes showed us 90 years ago, the right to vote is precious.

“Many people struggled to win this right and others then died to defend it. We want to make sure that Barnsley people, women and men, don’t lose this right, by reminding them how much it cost previous generations to win it.”

Every household will get an electoral registration form. This will ask householders to tell the council all the people in their homes who can vote or will soon be old enough to vote.
