Resurfacing work is set to begin on one of Sheffield's busiest routes, with drivers warned to expect disruption for the next three weeks.

Work on Ecclesall Road South is scheduled to start tomorrow and to take place overnight, from 7pm to 7am, in an attempt to minimise the impact on motorists.

The work is due to take place between the junctions with Psalter Lane and Carter Knowle Road, and sections will be closed during those hours, with diversions in place.

Ecclesall ward councillor Shaffaq Mohammed said the resurfacing was sorely needed but he would be 'keeping a close eye' to ensure it is completed on time and noise is kept as low as possible.

"The road's in dire need of repair and clearly there's always going to be an impact regardless of when you do that," he said.

"The night time closures will cause disruption for some people but it's been well signposted and I'm hopeful they can keep to the schedule.

"There have been occasions elsewhere where work has been scheduled and people have been told to move their cars but the actual work carried out on those days is minimal.

"I will be keeping a close eye to check they're working the whole time and keep the noise as low as possible so residents are not disturbed unnecessarily."

Matthew Whitehouse, who owns confectionery shop The Chocolate Bar on Ecclesall Road South, said: "The work needs doing and if they stick to the hours they say they're going to then there shouldn't be too much of a problem."

The work is being carried out as part of Sheffield Council's £2.2 billion Streets Ahead contract with Amey to repair and maintain the city's roads and pavements.

Nick Hetherington, network account manager for Streets Ahead, said: "Resurfacing work will take place throughout the night on Ecclesall Road South between the junctions with Psalter Lane and Carter Knowle Road from April 19.

"During the works, which will take place in stages, sections of the road will be closed and diversions will be in place to ensure people can reach their destination safely.

"Whilst carrying out our resurfacing works, we always attempt to keep noise and disruption to an absolute minimum. We would like to thank people for their patience as we work on this main thoroughfare into Sheffield, which is expected to take approximately three weeks to complete."
