With the Snake Pass and Woodhead Pass both closed to traffic because of snow and ice, motorists would normally have used the M62 to cross the country, but that has been closed since last night after motorists ended up stranded for hours.

The motorway remains closed eastbound between J20 and J22, and westbound between J24 and J21 due to strong winds and on-going work to clear the remaining stranded HGV's.

Highways England said the M62 is likely to remain closed until this afternoon or evening.
