M1 back open after five injured in multi-vehicle smash

THE M1 has now reopened in both directions after a multi-vehicle pile-up.

Police said a lorry travelling southbound was involved in a collision with a number of vehicles before crashing into the central reservation and ending up on the northbound carriageway.

The smash at 1.30am happened at Sutton Scarsdale, between Junctions 29a and 29.

A total of five people were taken to Chesterfield Royal Hospital, two with serious injuries.

Police closed the road in both directions between Junctions 290 and 39 on the southbound carriageway and junctions 29a and 29 northbound.
