Lucky David Brown is in the money after scooping £7,000 in a hospice lottery.
David, of Catcliffe, Rotherham won £7,000 in the Rotherham Hospice Friday Rollover draw.
Delighted wife Beverley said: “We’re still bouncing off the walls – we’ve never won anything like this before.”
David, who played the hospice lottery years ago, but stopped when he moved away, rejoined while chatting to a hospice volunteer manning a stand when he had an appointment at Rotherham Hospital last year.
“My sister recently passed away in the hospice,” said David, who has battled cancer and is disabled.
“When I visited my sister, I saw she had really good care - the staff were brilliant.
“When I saw the lottery stand, I went straight over and filled out the standing order form there and then.
“I was in the garden when my wife took the call from the hospice. I’m a former soldier and a lot of my friends on Facebook are always playing pranks on each other. I thought it might be one of them, so I didn’t believe I had actually won until I had the cheque in my hand!”
It is the second time David has won the Hospice Lottery.
Back in November, he won £10 and never cashed the cheque - treating his winnings as a donation.
But this time, the couple did enjoy their windfall. With five children and six grandchildren between them, David and Beverley treated their family to savings ISAs, then some new clothes for themselves and, in good Yorkshire style, have saved the rest for a rainy day.
