Low-key memorial service to mark 29th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster

A low-key memorial service will take place this afternoon to mark the 29th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.

A short 'private act of worship' will be held at Liverpool’s Metropolitan Cathedral to remember the 96 Liverpool fans who died in Britain's worst sporting disaster on April 15, 1989.

Previously the services were attended by members of the public and the Liverpool squad, although these were halted following the beginning of the judicial process looking into prosecuting those responsible for the disaster.

Today's tributes follow those at the Anfield stadium yesterday, which included a minute’s applause and a Kop mosaic ahead of Liverpool FC’s tie with Bournemouth.

Next year, the memorial service is expected to return to Anfield for the 30th anniversary of the disaster.
