A CAR-MAD Sheffield couple proved they’ve got the love bug - by travelling to their wedding reception in a brand new Volkswagen Beetle.
Carole Redican and Andy Emmingham, from Intake, who are both huge fans of all things VW, tied the knot at the register office in Sheffield Town Hall before celebrating at an annual Volkswagen show in Hooton Roberts, Rotherham.
Carole said she and Andy turned heads in their novel choice of wedding car - and that their fellow Sheffield Volkswagen Owners’ Club members thought the idea was ‘fantastic’.
The brand new, top-of-the-range, black Volkswagen Beetle was loaned to the couple by city car firm Gilders, who know the pair because of their enthusiasm.
Carole, a recruitment consultant, and Andy, a construction worker, were childhood sweethearts growing up in Gleadless Valley.
Carole attended Ashleigh School, while Andy was at Gleadless Valley Comprehensive.
After leaving school they went their separate ways but, three years ago, met up again through Facebook.
The couple, both aged 48, have seven children between them from previous relationships, aged six to 29, as well as three grandchildren.
“I love Volkswagen cars and Andy’s also been interested in them for many years,” said Carole.
“They’re really reliable cars, they carry on running and people look after them really well. They cherish them.”
The newlyweds own an original 1970s Beetle themselves.
Carole’s interest in VW models led her to take over organising Dub Odyssey, the annual Sheffield Volkswagen Owners’ Club show. The show, now in its 11th year, took place in Hooton Roberts over the weekend.
“The whole scene is really friendly,” she said. “But I don’t think anyone’s had a wedding reception at a VW show before.
“The members were quite enthusiastic about the idea.
“The Beetle is a stunning vehicle, and quite a few heads were turning as we were driving away.”
Carole said the centrepiece of the reception was their wedding cake - topped with a model of a Beetle.
