Lottie Skinner, aged 11, is a student at Verve Academy of Performing Arts, and Bluebell Woods is the school’s nominated charity this term. Students and staff are working together, from January to April, to raise an much money as they can for the children's hospice.

Lottie’s mum, Rachel, who has been helping her with the litter picking, said: “Everyone at the academy has chosen their own way of fundraising, from cake bakes, and coffee pop-ins, to car washing, and sponsored events. Verve has an amazing ethos for charity work, and last year managed to raise over £26,000 for Bluebell Wood.

“This year Lottie decided she would complete 20 hours of litter picking in the community. We live in Fulwood S10, and she has already made a start on the challenge in the village. She began litter picking with her school, at Hallam Primary, and the headteacher there has been kind enough to let us borrow a couple of litter pickers.

“Lottie is hoping that this challenge will not only help Bluebell Wood, but also our local community and environment; we certainly hope that it will help raise awareness and encourage people to be more mindful about the choices they make regarding litter. On her first day of litter picking, we picked up over 40 dog poo bags that had been thrown in the verge at the back of a field, along with lots of confectionery wrappers, cans, plastic and  glass bottles and cigarette ends.

“We think Bluebell Wood is an amazing charity, and they rely so much on charitable donations, so every penny really is appreciated.”
