Loss of hospital under fire

A NATIONAL charity has criticised Sheffield University’s plans to knock down the Edwardian wing of the former Jessop Hospital.

The Victorian Society claims the proposals, which involve clearing the site for an £80 million new engineering block, would ‘cause substantial harm to the setting’ of the surviving Victorian wing.

The original part of the hospital has been refurbished and brought back into use by the university.

James Hughes, conservation adviser for the Victorian Society, called the Edwardian wing a ‘thoughtfully crafted and handsome building’.
