Stan, who has been playing bowls since he was 18, is a long serving club secretary who has kept the club running and is captain of the midweek over 60s teams, known as the Vets.

Neil Fletcher, 48, is the captain of the Saturday team. He said: "We have around 20 members. I started at 15 and have always been at the club, Stan was actually the one who got me involved.

"He has been a great servant to the club and we thought it would make for a memorable occasion to have the Lord Mayor do the presentation.

"He's a local boy and it was nice to get him along and to get him to have a go. It was an experience, he was very engaging, asking questions, he was very approachable.

"He's a breath of fresh air for the city, and he's raising the profile of Sheffield."

Abbeyfield Park Bowling Club was founded in 1918, and held its first meeting on July 13th in the same year.

In the club's first year around 60 people joined, and later as the membership grew, they persuaded Sheffield City Council to establish a second green to accommodate the growing team.

Free places were also given to the wounded First World War soldiers who lodged at nearby Firshill.

Sine its establishment 100 years ago, the club has had many successes on the green and its players stay loyal to this historical club, and having just reached its centenary they are looking to raise awareness of the game.

New members are also welcome, and do not have to have any experience in the sport.

The club has three teams affiliated to the Sheffield and District Parks Bowling Association, to which the Lord Mayor is a patron.
