PLANS to waive restrictions on Sunday shop opening during the Olympics have been criticised by Rotherham MP Denis MacShane.

He said he has received emails from independent shopkeepers in his constituency who fear a ‘major loss of revenue’ if shoppers could go Retail World and Meadowhall and not pop into local shops.

Mr MacShane said: “It is causing a great deal of stress to all small shopkeepers, the very people who keep our local communities alive.”

Mr MacShane said the current system, in which large stores can only open for six hours, ‘works well’.
