A tear-stained face; it’s the honeypot when you’re a fly on the wall cameraman.

These days there are so many on-screen close-ups of people’s pain, I felt close to becoming immune.

But Long Lost Family, which returned to Monday night ITV with 5.2 million viewers, man, it gets me every time.

It’s makers are out to make money, just like every other TV company. Yet there is something so sincere, and quite noble, about that programme.

Much of it’s down to Davina. Big Brother’s big momma just breathes compassion. She seems utterly caught up in the sad stories of loss and longing, then the elation of a longed-for reunion. No matter how deep his Concerned Frown gets, co-presenter Nicky Campbell is a Wooden-Top in comparison.
