Local support services

As the increasing costs of chronic diseases are crippling the NHS and thus rightfully capturing media's attention, it is important for both healthcare practitioners and patients to explore whether adjacent therapies exist to support and speed up the patients' healing journey.

Fortunately, the NHS supports a number of such programmes at both established and experimental levels.

For example, our research team in collaboration with Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust and local Tissue Viability Clinics are trialling a programme that offers personalised exercise sessions to patients with leg ulcers in Sheffield, supporting travelling expenses as well.

The programme, which builds on scientific evidence that suggests that exercise supports the ulcer healing process, closes for new participants in early May 2016.

It is therefore important that the media are highlighting those opportunities, as they may offer important health benefits to those who suffer from conditions such as this.
