Lively lunch to mark opening of Goldthorpe facility

Dozens of charity supporters were joined for the lunch on July 15 by Wentworth and Deanre MP John Healey - and guests provoked some lively discussions.

Those attending talked to the Labour politician about issues facing the Dearne community, including health issues and unemployment. They also discussed how The Salvation Army and other organisations have been working together to support and empower members of the community.

Territorial Envoy Alison Sykes has been leading the church and charity for the past two years and has been part of the community for more than two decades. She first attended the parent-and-toddler group with her children and the warm welcome she received eventually led to her becoming leader of the worshipping congregation.

She said: “Goldthorpe is a fantastic place to live and we want everyone in our community to see that they are of value and worth and have an opportunity to flourish. We offer classes and clubs so that people can up-skill – whether that is developing interpersonal skills, trying a new hobby for enjoyment and that they can include on their CV when they are searching for work or even learning a practical skill such as cooking.”
