Students from Sheffield University will perform the songs to mark the 60th anniversary of the musical - some of which have not been heard for decades.

Featuring a selection songs from Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s first two Broadway musicals in the 1940s, What’s Up? and The Day Before Spring, a full Broadway-sized orchestra and cast of students will perform surviving numbers, some of which have not been performed for over 60 years.

The two concerts, at the University’s Firth Hall on Tuesday May 10 and Thursday May 12 also launch a new research collaboration focusing on Lerner and Loewe between Dr Dominic McHugh of the University’s Department of Music and Matthew Malone, who has recently been awarded the Frederick Loewe Doctoral Scholarship in Music.

The performances, which kick off the University’s annual Festival of Arts and Humanities and follows on from last year’s hit performance of songs cut from My Fair Lady, will also feature forgotten songs from Lerner and Loewe’s Paint Your Wagon and the film The Little Prince.

Dr McHugh said: “After the enormous public interest in our concert of songs cut from My Fair Lady at last year’s festival, I wanted to show a different side of Lerner and Loewe. They wrote many fine songs for their early projects that have rarely – if ever – seen the light of day but showcase their incredible range.

“With some discarded songs from Paint Your Wagon and a few numbers from their underrated last musical The Little Prince, the concert promises to shed new light on one of Broadway’s most enduring songwriting teams.”
