Sheffield drinkers will definitely want to raise a glass to these gone, but not forgotten pubs.

They may have fallen by the wayside but for many will always evoke happy times of a misspent youth or a sense of community and belonging.

Across Sheffield there many different locations which at one stage in their lives were pubs.

But now there are far too many examples of pubs which have been forced to close down and are now boarded up and possibly derelict.

Some may have closed down through a lack of custom while others have been swallowed up in the development of a property empire.

The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) aims to protect pubs from demolition or conversion as more and more pubs are being lost across the UK.

New statistics have revealed that 29 pubs are being lost a week across the country.

Currently pubs can be demolished or converted to other uses without planning permission.

However, pubs with Asset of Community Value status are given planning protection under law.

Despite the protection afforded to pubs through the ACV system CAMRA say this doesn’t go far enough to curb the closure of pubs in the UK and that the next logical step is to extend the same protection to all pubs across England.
