Dig out your bucket and spade – all the fun of the seaside is on its way to Sheffield.

The popular Sheffield by the Seaside event, which brings a traditional beach, fish suppers and waterside entertainment to residents, returns to the city tomorrow.

It includes a sand area in the Peace Gardens, while bumper cars and fairground rides will transform Fargate.

And, for the first time, the summer spectacular has been extended to cover The Moor and Barker’s Pool.

A spokesman for Sheffield Council, which sponsors the event, said: “There are some new events for this year.

“As usual the beach will in the Peace Gardens throughout August, with bumper cars and fairground rides on Fargate for people to enjoy.

“This year The Moor is to become The Pier and Barker’s Pool The Prom.

“On The Moor, there will be fun attractions such as stiltwalking mermaids, water-themed craft activities and seaside music.

“Barker’s Pool is going to be transformed later on in the afternoon with fun into the evening.

“There will be music, song and entertainment.

“Sheffield by the Seaside is always popular.”

Sheffield by the Seaside is part of the council’s Summer Saturdays campaign, which aims to bring people into the city centre to boost trade and support businesses. There are about 20 different events over the summer as part of the campaign, from Sheffield Pride to an open-air cinema.

It ties in with The Star’s Summer of Love drive to help local businesses back on their feet by encouraging city residents to spend their money locally and helping businesses to promote themselves to Star readers.

Sheffield by the Seaside runs until Wednesday, August 28, from 10am to 6pm each day.
