City councillors this morning approved the firm's application to sell alcohol from a new pub in Chaucer Road, on land that was formerly part of Chaucer School in Parson Cross.

Marston's will be able to sell alcohol between 10am and midnight Monday to Thursday, from 10am to 1am on Friday and Saturday, and from 11am to midnight on Sunday.

There was one objection from Jenny Clinging, who said the new pub would become a focus point for drugs, underage drinking and violence, and raised concerns about highway safety and noise. But councillors approved the licence.

A planning application for the pub was submitted in November, but a decision has not yet been made. According to the plans, Marston's wants to build a 150-seat 'community-style’ pub.

The site is bordered by housing, a football pitch and a playing field.
