Library policy may need reassessing

I write in reply to Geoff Smith's letter published May 30. Geoff and his Labour colleagues do not seem aware of the impact destaffing libraries has had, and have made it harder to access data on this.

The council previously collected data on footfall from door sensors at all libraries and published these on the library homepage on the council website along with issue figures from the library IT system.

It has now stopped collecting data from the door sensors at community libraries.

The council needs to collect data from the door sensors at community libraries and publish these figures publicly along with the figures from the library IT system so that it is possible to fully assess the impact current policy is having on footfall.

If it is found that people are being put off visiting community libraries, the council needs to revisit and reassess library policy to reverse this.
