Librarians were lifeline

Despite what our politicians are claiming, library usage at the staffed libraries in Sheffield is not declining to the extent that it is at the volunteer libraries.

Up until 2014 community libraries were providing one of the most efficient, cost-effective social services the council provided.

For the elderly and vulnerable community librarians were a lifeline.

They provided regularity, contact, communication and certainty in an uncertain world.

Library staff for community libraries would be a much better (and cheaper) investment for the city than more shop and office space for big businesses.
