The girlfriend of Sheffield United player Ched Evans, jailed for rape, has forgiven him for “cheating on her” – and says the striker should be allowed to return to football.
Evans was convicted of raping a woman at a hotel in North Wales in May 2011, and sent to prison for five years, but will be released next month. More than 65,000 people have signed a petition urging the Blades not to re-sign him.
But Evans’ girlfriend of four-and-a-half years, Natasha Massey, who believes he will be cleared on appeal, says he should be allowed to play again.
“If he was a builder or a bank worker we wouldn’t be having this conversation,” she said. “He’s a professional footballer, and he just wants to get on the pitch and score goals.
“I think he should be allowed to do that.”
